I WRITE in response to the closure of the Centurion Pub. It is such a sad event when a pub closes particularly a premises that over the years has been a focal point of the St Julians Estate.
Sadly, the demise of this premises is just one of many pubs that have fallen to the economic and cultural changes that have beset our communities.
That being said, these and many other establishments will continue to decline due to lack of local support.
St Julians is a large estate which has enjoyed increased development over the interim but clearly the footfall required to maintain a local public house has not been evident.
Brewers do not close pubs that are viable, that’s a fact.
I would say to the good people of this community, that if the same level of support was given to their local pub to maintain its survival was as vociferous as the protest is to prevent its development into flats for much needed homes, this sad situation would not now be an issue.
