I’M NOT entirely sure which section of the river Usk Mark Stevens is referring to in Thursday’s letters, but it’s certainly not the same dirty, depressing monstrosity I witness every day when cycling to work.

He claims the stretch of the river that runs through Newport is bursting with wildlife and natural beauty.

If he genuinely believes this then may I suggest he follows the advice on the advert for SpecSavers?

The only signs of life I have witnessed in the river Usk is the occasional seagull stuck in a shopping trolley or a gang of rats wading for their lives through the thick mud banks before the tide comes in.

The river Usk in Newport is a depressing eyesore and the tide aside serves very little purpose for the modern economy of the city.

The potenial benefits of creating a barrage at the mouth of the river Usk massively outweigh the homes of a few worms and migrant birds.

If the opportunity of a government- backed investment for a barrage is back on the table then Newport City Council should pull out all the stops to make it happen.

If not, then there will be more than enough empty shops and businesses in Newport for the whole of the world’s wildfowl and wading birds to take refuge in!
