I WAS born, went to school, worked and have lived in Newport all of my life. I have been with Newport through its bad times and good. I believe it would be a step backward to depedestrianise the Commercial Street area of the city centre. It will lead to chaos and disruption. First the buses, then the cars, then the disabled drivers parking on the side of the street. I also believe it will reduce pedestrian safety and patience. The buses are close to the city centre now, so bringing them into Commercial Street will not increase footfall, only more congestion.
Easier parking, the new Debenhams and the redevelopment of John Frost Square with the addition of the cinema and restaurants should make a big difference to the centre.
Please do not take a step backward by doing this.
