ON JULY 1 1941, a landmine dropped on Eveswell Street, Maindee, killing 37 people. Although the Gimlett family lost seven members and has been well documented over the years, many other families lost members.

I am looking for information about the other people that died on this night, especially any photographs of the casualties to add to my Newport’s War Dead website.

My websites are being copied regularly and archived by the national libraries of Britain, Wales and Scotland, so the information they contain, including the images, will never be lost.

Some of the families I am interested in are: the Bird/Comley family, who lost two sons, Sidney and John aged 17 and 19, and Gwen their step mother; the Gabica family. who lost Dorothy and Morgan; the Garland family, who lost Elizabeth, Albert and Edwin; the Hall family, Claude and Barbara, a father and his ten-year-old daughter; the Ley family, Helen, Robert and Anthony, a mother and her two children aged five and seven; the Thomas family, father, mother and their three children aged 15, 16, 17, a family wiped out.

I would welcome any information and photos of any of those who died that night or of the casualties of the other bombings that took place in and around Newport, as well as any other events such as the sinking of the City of Benares.
