WITHDRAWAL of age-related allowances: No doubt many of your readers, particularly those over or approaching 65, will be very disappointed to learn that Labour’s amendment to restore the age-related personal allowances was defeated in the House of Commons on April 18, 2012.

At a time when pensioners are struggling to make ends meet due to low interest rates and modest pensions, they have extremely limited opportunities to make good lost income. Therefore the phasing out of these age-related allowances is grossly unfair.

I would, therefore, encourage all South Wales Argus readers to sign the e-petition so that the Government is forced to re-debate this unfair change on the floor of the House of Commons. The petition has already been signed by more than 63,000 people but 100,000 signatures are needed to force the Government to think again!

The e-petition can be accessed on-line at the followinglink: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/31778
