ON April 28, I visited Cwmcarn Leisure Centre to watch my granddaughter take part in a gymnastics competition.

There were many young competitors from all over Newport, Torfaen and Chepstow taking part. The entrance to the leisure centre is adjacent to Cwmcarn High School. The appearance of the school leaves a lot to be desired and I was totally shocked to see how run-down it had become.

The sports hall/gymnasium was very cold and I heard a great deal of complaints about the lack of heat. The floors were dirty and the toilets were in a dilapidated condition, one toilet could not be flushed. I spoke to several past pupils and they remarked about the deterioration of the building.

I taught at this school 25 years ago and it seems to me that there has been little attempt to maintain this complex to a reasonable standard. Perhaps someone from Caerphilly County Borough Council would care to comment.
