THE public have the right to expect the best possible service from their police force and to have police officers visible and effective on our streets. Perhaps the coalition see no reason to be too concerned in London, but I would hope that isn’t the case in Wales. I had a powerful impression reading her Argus letter of June 8, that Gwent Police’s chief constable, Carmel Napier, is concerned that the service is not as good as she’d like it to be. She is a very charming lady and hopefully very persuasive, but she must be open with us and tell us exactly what is going on.

Get people on her side and let us know if we need to lobby our MPs or AMs. Gwent MP David Davies I would expect to be very sympathetic. I’m not at all sure about Theresa May and her choice of Tom Windsor as head of the police service though, Twenty per cent cost cutting? Most of us want to see a highly experienced police officer in overall charge not one who has seen no service. An axe man?
