MORE than 100,000 older people in Wales are living in poverty, according to a new report.
According to the Age Alliance report, Wales: A Good Place to Grow Old?, four out of 10 older people said they are sometimes or often lonely while the same proportion described their health as only “poor” or “fair”.
The report has been written by the Bevan Foundation for Age Alliance Wales.
Victoria Winkler, author and director of Bevan Foundation, said: “The picture painted is a worrying one, with far too many older people having such low incomes that they are struggling to make ends meet.
“Too many do not get the health and social care services they need and many are treated with a lack of dignity and respect and, at worst, are abused.
Wales have had a Labour Government in Cardiff Bay since 1999 and Labour was in Government in London for 13 years prior to the Tories taking over. There are lots of Labour-controlled councils. Seems to me Labour has the wrong policies, the wrong people in charge while Wales have continued to vote for the wrong party in government; if we judge a party by the poverty of children and the aged, then Labour has failed Wales.
