IN response to Julian Powell’s suggestion that we put the Newport ship in a bottle (Letters, June 25), I reminded him that he had promised me a pair of kippers as consolation for the destruction of the Newport whale.

I was disappointed that my letter when printed said that we could keep the Newport ship “inflated” where I had meant to convey that we could keep the Newport ship inside an area of inflated fabric engineering.

However, all sadness was dispelled this morning by the arrival of a mystery package that contained a brace of best kippers with a note wishing me “Bon Appetit.” Thank you Julian for my ‘consolation kippers’; they were, like your letters, most enjoyable.
