ON MONDAY, July 9, a letter to all local businesses, traders, church leaders and neighbours was received from St Julian’s School explaining how the introduction of blazers and ties and the phased lunch time lock down was going to reduce anti-social behaviour and lunchtime litter outside the school grounds.

Having apparently spent time considering the loss of revenue to local food establishments in these tough economic times and by complying with the Assembly’s Appetite for Life, doesn’t this tar all pupils (learners), including my daughter, as being unable to behave, be litter louts and unable to eat a balanced diet without supervision?

What this letter fails to point out is that the school has often abdicated any responsibility for children outside the school grounds, has failed to enforce previous dress code and failed to educate pupils about healthy eating and, as a result, the majority are being punished because of actions or behaviour of a minority.
