I agree with Samuel Boyd (Argus letters, July 30) that the introduction of elected police and crime commissioners is a political act by the government, but maintain that politics and policing should remain separate and distinct.
As one close to Ian Johnston’s campaign, I can assure Mr Boyd that he has not received and is not soliciting any financial assistance in his bid to be elected as PCC for Gwent on November 15. Ian is truly independent and is relying on an enthusiastic and growing band of supporters who believe that he is the right man for the job. I also happen to think that nearly 40 years serving the people of Gwent is not baggage, but rather experience that will prove invaluable in holding the chief constable to account.
