I HAVE recently read your article on Brown’s butchers, Blackwood. I agree that this will be a memorable moment in the history of Blackwood when Stuart Brown retires and the butchers is closed.

I was just a skinny 12-year-old when I brazenly walked into the shop and announced to Stuart’s father Aussie, as he was known, that I had come for the job which the current ‘butchers boy’ did not want any more.

Mr Brown looked me up and down in some amazement and I remember thinking I would not be successful. I believe that, after asking my name and then finding out my father was a long- time acquaintance – they had both been ‘butchers’ boys’ themselves when growing up – that he gave me a chance.

I worked in the shop from then until I left school to join the RAF. Stuart became a mentor and life-long friend. We had much fun during the regular delivery rounds, which were normal in those days. In the shop, working with the family and staff was a memorable and happy time. This shop will very shortly be taken over and changed forever. I wish Stuart and Jan a very long and enjoyable retirement –it is well-earned.
