One cannot fail to react to Friday’s article about creating a scale model of the remains of the Newport Ship. Not that there is anything to object to in those terms alone, but how could this conceivably cost anything remotely near the £1,000 quoted? From what I saw of these remains on my last visit, they could be recreated in miniature using a maximum of ten boxes of matches. How much would that cost, I wonder? May I further suggest the matches should be left live? Then, when everyone is bored (shouldn’t take too long), one of the matches could be struck so producing a lively re-enactment of a Viking funeral.
