My worst defeat as a manager, says Justin Edinburgh

COUNTY 0 FOREST GREEN 5

EMBARRASSED Newport County boss Justin Edinburgh admits the Exiles’ New Year’s Day massacre at the hands of Forest Green Rovers was the worst defeat he’s experienced as a manager.

The angry boss also revealed he will haul his players in for training today and to watch the video nasty of the game, despite it being a scheduled day off.

County arguably shaded the opening half an hour but were subsequently put to the sword by Rovers who really could’ve won by a greater margin than 5-0.

“We’ve been properly beaten, badly beaten and it’s a blip, we need to dust ourselves down, it hurts right now, but it’s about the way we respond,” he said.

“We’ve conceded disappointing goals through individual errors, it wasn’t nice to watch and wasn’t enjoyable for our supporters.

“It’s really hard to take for all of us. We’ve all been embarrassed; it was an embarrassing performance.

“I am looking for a response, I expect it and that’s why the players will be in for their day off. When you perform like that you don’t deserve a day off. It’s not so much a punishment, it’s essential, and we need to address things.

“It’s the worst performance I’ve been involved with.”

Edinburgh has vowed to press on with his plans to strengthen the squad but has warned it won’t be simple to land the targets he really wants.

“I’ve made no qualms about that (wanting new signings), we always want to make ourselves stronger, but you need the right players and it’s difficult to do that,” he explained.

“But of course we want to be stronger. For 17 of 23 games this season we’ve been top of the league and it’s hard to do that, but it’s why I’m confident we will bounce back and respond.”

The manager is looking for a response. He will get it...about 1000 less spectators at the next home game!

The message continues to be plain and simple Mr E. Get a proper defense together plus a decent goal keeper. That will stop your further embarrassment.

glad J.E. recognises that it was an EMBARRASING performance, i do trust in him give the players what for.

its up to the players to take it like men, be counted , and get back out on that pitch and produce the goods.

as justin rightly points out we have been top for so long, SO COUNTY PLAYERS get your head out of the clouds , get back to basics, and play like you played in the first 17 games.

the title is there for the taking, and the side that produces a CONSISTENT run of results will pull away and probably WIN THE LEAGUE.

now is the time for CONSISTENCY, in the final half of the season.play like you are PROUD TO WEAR AMBER, play like you d lay your life on the line for the team, play with PASSION, play with COMMITMENT, play with DESIRE, and the crowd will respond and make RODNEY PARADE the cauldron of fire it was earlier in the season

COME ON COUNTY PLAYERS THE FANS NEED YOU............

Nice sentiments C.V. but I'm afraid that that sort of commitment in sport (and life in general) is long gone. Today's sport is little more than a branch of the entertainment industry and is treated as such by most of it's participants. I suspect the vast majority of supporters are more commited to the cause than the players. Players and managers move from club to club at the drop of a bigger pay cheque and ideas like loyalty simply don't come into the equation any more.We are constantly told it's a dog eat dog world and that seems to excuse all forms of disloyalty and lack of commitment. So be it. There endeth the lesson for today !!

i, also was at the game yesterday , and of the two teams , forest green , looked promotion candidtes, not county. after the frantic start, they hassled and hustled county all over the park. never giving them time to settle on the ball. we didn`t have a plan "B" to get out of it. a centre forward who flcked headers into space where no-one was, a midfield that played square and back had no idea. i know i shall be shouted at ,but lee evans as not played well since coming back from injury, anthony looked out of place playing with little conviction, the central defence noticed it and played the ball amongst themselves. no need to discuss the keepers mistakes, {pidgley must be rubbing his hands, he must come back into the side,} and in typical fashon blamed everyone within earshot. forest greens forwards, were slick with their passing, playing on the counter attack, they tore us to shreds, let`s hope we can recover, because if we can`t, forget about league two. iv`e had my say,but i shall still be there friday, and every home game waving my pension book, i admire the fans who go away, they are a credit to the club.. think positive NEWPORT 5- WREXHAM 0

With the defenders wandering off all over the place its no wonder they were caught out. If JE is looking for players he should try to find 4 defenders who are capable of playing in the position they are supposed to be playing in.

Too all the doom mongers - look where we were this time last year and look where we are now. Let's have some balance and perspective. Yes, Tuesday was a shock result but let's not go overboard in the criticism - JE is doing an exceptional job. Win Friday and it'll all be forgotten
