A LATE free-kick from substitute Andy Sandell earned Newport County AFC a shock three points at Portsmouth – their first win of the League Two campaign.

Substitute Sandell, who started the season as captain before being dropped last week, proved a point as his 84th minute strike beat everyone and home goalkeeper Paul Jones could only watch as it drifted beyond him and into the net.

Justin Edinburgh’s men survived a barrage of second half pressure from promotion favourites Pompey before and after the goal but survived to repeat their victory at Fratton Park last season.

Edinburgh said: "We’ve shown today how much belief we have in this squad.

"I have great belief and respect for these players and the quality they have and it’s starting to show now.

"For us as a football club, coming to a place like this is incredible," he added.

"Eight years ago they were winning at Goodison Park in the Premier League and we were playing in the Conferenece South at Hampton & Richmond.

"So we’ve got to remember where we’ve come from in such a short space of time.

"We were bottom of the Conference when I came to the club and today we’ve won away in front of 16,500.

"I think people have got to enjoy that because it’s a fantastic result and a fantastic day for us.

"We’ll always remain positive but we are a small club competing in the Football League for only the second time in our history.

"I think days like today are really enjoyable and something we can build on."

What a game !!! Best this season. County functioned as a team (Tim Thraves words) Nearly fell off my baby chair when that free kick went in. County have no need to fear anyone in this league as long as they keep playing as a team like they did today. M'O'M' for me it was the whole team. 1st clean sheet great goalkeeping. Brilliant result keep it up. Inspired substitute.

Three very welcome points against one of the top teams of League 2.

When the match was destined to end in a goalless draw, up came Andy Sandell to hammer the ball into the net direct from the freekick.

First win, first blank sheet of the season. A win that lessens the pressure on the gaffer and all the players; let's now look forward for the next match with more optimism to climb up further the ladder. Up the County.

That was more comfortable than perhaps the report infers. Our defence and midfield were robust with no quarter given or asked. All the Team fought for each other and when a mistake was made there was always someone else to sweep up. Sat in the Portsmouth end, our physical style of play was certainly arousing passions but was very effective. For the first time in some while, not once did I see us losing and when we went 1 up, never saw us relinquishing the lead either. Fantastic all round performance, only concern is that our strikers still appear to be experiencing a bit of a goal famine.

Dear jiffygeorge,

We, common mortals, cannot forecast the future, so please let us enjoy these 3 points against Pompey and the point against co-leaders Burton Albion.

If our players read and believe your comments, they can pack up and give up the ghost. But people base their lives on hope, and County fans will continue to sustain our lads until the very last match of this year's League 2.

Happy Sunday, mate.

Brilliant 3 points

As you were at the game great to see your report

A big worry as you say is up front still with nobody picked so far impressing or running into form.
We cannot rely on defenders and midfield to get us regular goals.
Give Parker a run he may turn out like Connor.
Don't change anything else.

Dear ASRNCAFC,
You're right. Fans have every right to enjoy the fantastic Pompey result and, despite my comments, I am thoroughly enjoying the result too. And I have never lambasted the players, merely pointed out time and time again that if we are genuine about building a team good enough to do more than merely avoid the dreaded drop back to the Conference, we require just a couple more decent signings. Hence my consistent criticism of the fact we have sat on our backsides for several months and failed to address obvious weaknesses. But none of this alters the fact that, no matter what, I have supported the County for over 50 years and saw every match of the dreadful campaign under Bobby Ferguson when we set a record for the number of games at the start of a season before winning. All I want is the best for the County, like every decent fan.

I would have to agree with you Jiffygeorge.
A 1-1 home draw against the team that finished 6th last year and a 1-0 away win against the team that finished 13th to give a total of 4 points.
We lost 1-0 to Mansfield who finished 11th and lost 3-2 to Morecambe who finished 18th.

Since round 22 last year.
Played 30, Won 5, Drawn 10, lost 15, Total points 25.

We are still in relegation form sorry to say.

Another -ve comment we can do without ffs. This is why after a poor result attendance drops yet look at Pompey! 16000 + turn out despite Lge2 status! That is +ve support for your team. Credit Portsmouth fans! The best in my opinion.
