out of all the people i was able to vote for, only 1 person actually knocked on my door, i had no other leaflets from any others, what's the point of running for election if you're not going to get yourself out there and show people what you're made of? I even looked on the Argus web site to try and find some details but to no avail. What a complete farce!

The only answer to the poor turn-out is to make it obligatory to vote. In Australia you will receive a Hefty fine if you do not cast your vote. My guess is the the three main parties do not want this to happen because they know fringe parties will get a few seats that they would hope to get

You hve got the right idea but got a few facts wrong. The fine in Australia is $25au (about £15). The vote because in the main they think they should. Also as most members of the two main political parties and they agree people should be made to vote, it's just one of this 'difficult' thinks that no one wants to be the first to put forward.

My prediction for Newport is a really low turnout (below 25%) and Labour being returned to running the Council.

In Caerleon, the campaign has been too low key, without any kind of real incident that gets local interest going. You need candidates working all year round to ensure the voters are making their choice based on full understanding of where a candidate sits on given issues.

I think we need to inform potential candidates about the great satisfaction in being able to help others, rather than the downside of being a councillor and get more young people motivated to be involved - decisions in the room are made by those whoi turn up.

I wanted a greater choice of candidates, yet only three parties put up candidates and there were no independents...very disappointing.

Why? If someone does not vote it is because they do not have any confidence in any of the parties.

Can one just not spoil their ballot to avoid the fine? I'd vote for Darth Vader.

Wonder why the argus hasn't reported on one of the independent councillors behaviour during the count last night?

Hope the council whip / police take action over that last night!

Shocking!

Perhaps Labour can now, without delay, reinstate bus lanes and improve bus public transport in the City. Labour must also recognize there are bus users in places like Rhiwderin, where there has been a progressive erosion of services, limiting the value of what remains. Some common sense needs to be applied. For example, not running services that coincide, and duplicate in time, those provided by Stagecoach, but instead running services at times that do not compete with those provided by Stagecoach. Provide bus shelters where people actually, in the main, wait for buses; not, in some arbitrary location, where the town hall planners imagine they should be. E.g. there should be a bus shelter at the bottom of Cwm Cwddy Drive, where most people from lower Rhiwderin wait, and at the Rhiwderin end of Laurel Drive, in the cityward direction. There needs to be better recognition that people work in the Cleppa Park areas and at the Intellectual Property and ONS Offices warranting better services down Forge Lane, including to these areas. Some services to Rhiwderin could be provided by extensions from Gaer services, where there is very generous service provision, to release capacity and funding for services not currently provided for.
